BIOGRAPHY

Alex Hren (b. 2002, Slovenia), originally from Zreče, began his musical education at the Music School Slovenske Konjice before continuing at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Maribor, where he studied piano and music composition. In 2021, he was admitted to the University of Ljubljana’s Academy of Music, where he studied composition under Prof. Uroš Rojko and Prof. Vito Žuraj, completing his bachelor’s degree in 2024. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in instrumental composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln under the mentorship of Prof. Miroslav Srnka.

His works have been performed at renowned venues and festivals by esteemed ensembles and soloists, including Ensemble Modern, ASMANGU ensemble, Marion Ravot, the Slovenian Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra, and Ensemble Recherche. Most recently, his first orchestral work was premiered at the Acht Brücken festival 2025 in the Cologne Philharmonie with the Orchestra of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

In recognition of his compositional achievements, he was awarded the 2024 Prešeren Award of the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana. He is also a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia.

His upcoming commissions include a new orchestral piece for the Slovenian Philharmonic and a new ensemble work for Ensemble Musikfabrik.
